New study claims lying can help you lose weight

Scientists have succeeded in implanting false memories in people, making them believe that they’re allergic to certain foods like strawberry ice cream, or making them think that they like asparagus.

Isn’t this going a little too far? Oh wait—don’t I already do this when I tell myself that diet food doesn’t taste so bad?

The mind is a really powerful thing. We can convince ourselves of pretty much anything. People on placebos who believe that they are actually getting treatment get better, even though they are just taking a simple sugar pill. The flip side of the placebo effect is the nocebo effect: people given a real pill don’t get better if they are already convinced that the treatment won’t work.

The power of suggestion is so strong that even innocent people can be made to believe that they’re guilty and confess to crimes they didn’t commit. In general, it seems easy for people to confuse what’s real and what’s imaginary.
