Peter Jennings Loses Battle With Lung Cancer
The death of newscaster Peter Jennings from lung cancer at 67 has brought the dangers of smoking to people’s attention. Jennings quit smoking 20 years ago but started smoking again after the September 11 attacks.
On average, smokers die 10 years sooner than non-smokers. But this article says that quitting smoking can help prolong smokers’ lives.
Don’t think that you can wait until you start to feel symptoms before quitting. By the time you experience the symptoms of lung cancer, it will already be in the advanced stage. At that late stage, there is little that can be done to stop the cancer, and you are very likely to die from it.
The best thing to do is to quit now, and see your doctor if you are coughing. Here are some things that might help you quit smoking. You will also need to have the motivation to quit.
Most cases of lung cancer (87%) are caused by smoking, but non-smokers can also get lung cancer. Non-smoking women such as Dana Reeve (Christopher Reeve’s wife) have been getting lung cancer in increasing numbers. Many of these non-smoking women are young and Asian. Two possible causes of lung cancer among non-smokers are genetics and radon exposure in the home.

Stopping at age 50 cuts the risk of dying in half, while quitting at age 30 almost eliminates the risk.
