As Exemptions Grow, Religion Outweighs Regulation - New York Times
Religious organizations are getting so many exemptions from the US government that they seem to be getting preferential treatment compared to other non-profit organizations and secular organizations.
Religious organizations are getting tax breaks for things like biblical theme parks, broadcaster’s transmission towers, day care centers and housing for teachers at church-run schools, and they get these tax exemptions even if they do not engage in any charitable activity. In effect, other taxpayers are subsidizing these religious organizations.
Aside from tax exemptions, religious organizations are also exempted from having to comply with government standards and regulations in things such as employment practices, day care and land use.
