No wonder people get grumpy when they're on a diet.or are hungry. One study has shown that low serotonin levels lead people to become more aggressive/combative.
Our responses to stress can vary from not being able to eat much to eating too much, or from not being able to sleep to sleeping to escape. How we cope varies according to individual proclivities. But there are healthier ways to deal with stress, such as exercise, art, reading or listening to music. The key is to replace the bad behaviors with good ones as much as we can.

A new study has found that "people tend to overvalue the things they own and prefer what they own rather than comparable things they don't own -- a phenomenon known as the 'endowment effect.'... brain research shows that this effect often seems to exist not because people are more driven to appreciate the things they own and find them more attractive, but because they simply can't stand the thought of losing a possession." Simply put, our brains may be hard-wired to be irrational when it comes to our possessions.
"People with sleep apnea show tissue loss in brain regions that help store memory. ...'Our findings demonstrate that impaired breathing during sleep can lead to serious brain injury that disrupts memory and thinking.'"
